“Some people give time, some money, some their skills and connections, some literally give their life’s blood.
But everyone has something to give.”
— Barbara Bush
Our team believes that to whom much is given, much is expected. With that in mind, we step away from our work each year to spend time celebrating the season by giving back to our community. We’ve been involved in a number of memorable projects, but this year’s was especially poignant, due to the recent passing of Barbara Bush.
A Lasting Legacy
During her time as First Lady and throughout the remainder of her life, Mrs. Bush dedicated her time and family resources to increasing literacy in Texas and across the nation. This mission lives on locally through the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation.
We recently had the joy of providing books and floral arrangements for the Ladies of Literacy and were so inspired by the BBHLF’s mission, we felt moved to become more deeply involved.
Closing the Book Gap
The truth of the matter is, 61% of low-income families have no books in their homes, which is a devastating fact. And it’s a fact that our team wants to help change. We reached out to the BBHLF asking how we could help and they arranged an opportunity for our team to volunteer with their My Home Library program.
Here’s how it works:
1. With the assistance of their librarians and teachers, children select books they would love to have at home from a long list on the My Home Library website.
2. Thanks to generous donors, those books are ordered and eventually sorted by hundreds of volunteers.
3. The books are distributed to students throughout HISD who are invited to take the books home, essentially collecting their very own home library.
We had the joy of being Santa’s elves last week, delivering My Home Library books to students at Bear Creek Elementary. It brought us indescribable joy to see their faces light up when they realized their books had finally arrived, and that they would be taking them home! Many of our team members also had the opportunity to participate in a Read Aloud, which is a time-honored tradition Barbara Bush cherished.
How You Can Help
Feeling inspired? We are, too. Whether it’s through the BBHLF or another worthy cause, we hope you and your loved ones carve out time to serve others this season.
If you’re in the Houston area, we’ve got a few resources that share volunteer activities you can sign up for now:
We hope you find something that speaks to you and that you’ll leave us a note sharing the ways you plan to serve others this holiday season!
