Every New Year’s Day offers an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and the beauty of fresh starts. No matter your 2019 resolutions, beginning the year well-organized is the difference between a successful launch and a false-start. And what’s that they say? When you look good, you feel good, which means there’s no better time than the present to hit that refresh button and clean out your closet!
We’ve teamed up with Wardrobe Stylist and Fashion Blogger, Valerie Dittner of Adorn Yourself Accordingly, to share five ways you can bring order to your wardrobe before your calendar sings January. Read on for Valerie’s tips along with a few drool-worthy closets from our portfolio!
Organize By Style, Then Color
It seems logical to organize your clothing by color because it’s so pleasing to the eye, but I find it’s most useful to organize first by item type, then by color within that style. For example, hang all of your blazers together, then organize by color within your blazers. It’s much easier to get dressed when you can quickly find things by function.
Keep Your Bags Stuffed and At-the-Ready
It’s always a good idea to store your purses in their dust bags for long-term storage. But for bags that you carry often and want to carry more, consider keeping them stuffed with tissue paper, but out of their dust bags. I put the stuffing in the dust bag so it’s easy for me to switch out bags day-to-day, and re-stuff the bag when I’m done with it. You’ll be surprised at how much more you change your purse when they are all on display!
Purge Pieces That Don’t Make You Feel Incredible
It’s so tempting to keep things in your closet that you are lukewarm about, thinking, “I’ll wear that someday,” but you truly want your closet to be filled exclusively with pieces that make you feel incredible. If you use this measuring stick when purging your closet, you won’t miss the items you toss, and you’ll find that your closet is filled with pieces that empower you to live your most fabulous life.
Assess Your Classic Shoe Collection
The new year is a great time to make sure you have a well-rounded collection of classic and versatile shoes. Look through and see if you need to update that timeless pair of black pumps, resole your Gucci loafers, or add a couple of versatile classics, like cap-toe ballet flats or a strappy nude heel.
Define Your Style Direction
What fashion icons and trendsetters are catching your eye right now? Do you want to incorporate more color into your wardrobe or invest in more classic styles? Make a Pinterest inspiration board with looks you love, and make sure any new purchases fit within your sartorial goals. That way, you won’t buy anything you aren’t excited to wear.
