Springtime in New York is pure magic, dear friends, and I’m here to report that the magic of our latest journey had nothing to do with seeing The Big Apple in bloom…well, almost nothing!
When Housing Works approached me to serve as an official designer for Design on a Dime NYC I had absolutely no clue what I was getting myself into. In fact, I wasn’t sure where to start, who to reach out to, or how this splendid, wild, awe-inspiring effort would eventually bring us all together.
As a first-time DOAD designer, I was quickly initiated into an exciting world where creatives across industries dedicate countless hours in support of a 3-day home furnishings and decor sale. Proceeds from that sale become life-saving funds that support the Housing Works mission to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS across the country. This year, the effort raised $1.2 million, and we’re still feeling awestruck by how everything came together!
So, you might ask – where did I start after agreeing to participate? With a design concept, of course!
I filled my vision board with dreamy selections that I would choose for my very own home, and from there, our team got to work making special requests on behalf of this great cause! We were overwhelmed by the willingness of our incredible vendors who participated and so grateful for the lavish generosity shown by each one. I hope you’ll scroll on to discover where you can pick up our vignette pieces for yourself.
Please note: A selection of items from our vignette were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, but our donors would be happy to help you source something similar!
This year was quite a special year because Design on a Dime invited four Houston designers to join in the fun! I can’t tell you how much we loved packing up, heading out, and enjoying NYC with a few of our local faves: Aaron Rambo Creative, Contour Interior Design, and Meg Lonergan Interiors!
Check out their vignettes below, and while you’re at it, can we get an AMEN for #MakeRoomForHouston!?
Now, you know we couldn’t visit NYC without hitting up a few of our local faves! So, before we leave you, below are the Greenwich Village hot spots that topped our list during this trip:
“Inspired by European traditions that honor a history of craft and design,” Buvette is the most charming place to share a meal! From the ambiance and crafted cocktails to the delectable pastries and a to-die-for brunch experience, Buvette is an absolute must next time you’re in NYC.
With a curated antique shopping experience at the front and a dining space in back, Beauty and Essex is a straight-up designer’s dream!
If you’ve got a pasta craving that just won’t stop, look no further than Rosemary’s NYC. We gathered here post-install and couldn’t get enough of the Caprese Focaccia and Chitarra Alla Carbonara! With a rooftop garden, an open-air vibe for those sunny spring days, and an extensive selection of house-made pasta, the ambiance is just as delightful as the food.
Design on a Dime took place at the Metropolitan Pavilion, and we lucked out getting the most lovely rooms at a boutique hotel within walking distance. We instantly fell in love with Walker Hotel’s Art-Deco inspired decor and the gracious, hospitable team who made our entire stay so pleasant! Be sure to stop in and check them out for a drink, a meal, or an overnight stay next time you’re in the Greenwich Village area!
It was such an honor being a part of Design on a Dime NYC, and we’re already looking forward to next year! Drop us a line below with any questions you have. Hope you enjoyed following our little journey to the Big Apple!
