7 Ideas for Creating a More Meaningful Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and as a team full of mamas, it’s a special occasion for us to focus on family and celebrate all of the women we cherish! You can show your mom that you care in so many beautiful ways, and this year, we’re making a conscious effort to accumulate experiences with loved ones rather than more stuff. Gathering for a special outing involves the whole family, creating wonderful memories to reflect on for years to come. On the hunt for something meaningful and unique? Allow the wise words of these lovely leading ladies below to inspire you!

Embrace Quality Time

This initial suggestion may sound obvious, but between work, social engagements, errands, and extracurricular activities, finding uninterrupted family time can be a real struggle. Schedule a day to spend distraction-free, one-on-one time with your mom! You know her best, so brainstorm the activities she enjoys most, and surprise her with an itinerary focused on her favorites! Pack a picnic, go on a walk, head to the zoo, or buy tickets to an art exhibition. Chances are, there are plenty of local places you have yet to explore. Need some inspiration? Find a city guide for your hometown, or plan a day trip to a nearby destination. We’re loving this comprehensive list of Houston restaurants and attractions from House of Harper!

Plant a Garden

We couldn’t agree with you more, Aerin! Flowers have the power to immediately cheer up a space and put a smile on every face. This year, instead of sending your mom an over-priced arrangement that likely won’t last ’til Memorial Day, plant her a garden! It doesn’t have to be elaborate – even a few potted pretties will be something she can revisit and enjoy; a steady reminder of your special bond for seasons to come. Potted flowers are particularly nice because she can create simple arrangements from their freshly cut stems throughout the year!

(PS – When possible, help mama water her newly established plants because nobody needs another thing added to that pesky to-do list!)

Make a Meal

Whether you grew up grabbing takeout on the go, or always sat around the dinner table for a home-cooked feast, your mom likely juggled a lot more than you realized to get your tummy filled. Now it’s her turn to be taken care of! Surprise her with a delicious meal and handle the dishes while you’re at it!

And remember, if all else fails, there’s nothing wrong with a store-bought specialty. It truly is the thought that counts!

Craft a Fragrance

Scents have the profound ability to elicit emotion and nostalgia. Take your mom to a perfumery where she can customize a signature scent. Coast to coast, there are countless workshops and independent boutiques that can help you create an exquisite personal fragrance. And if you don’t have a custom shop nearby, international brands like Jo Malone, Le Labo, and Orris offer consultations so that she can narrow in on the perfect fit available through their vast collections. They will also teach you how to layer multiple perfumes for a completely unique combination. Take the day to enjoy this luxurious stimulation of the senses!

Get Her Giggling

Smiling is proven to be therapeutic, and there’s nothing better than time spent laughing with loved ones. Consider going to a funny movie, binge watching your favorite comedy, or catching the latest improv act at your local theater. When your cheeks are hurting and you have stitches in your side, you’ll know it’s a success!

Give Her a Break!

Days roll into weeks and weeks roll into years, and the monotony of dishes, laundry, and responsibility takes its toll! Send your mom packing to the nearest spa and treat her to a relaxing getaway (this one is a great group gift idea!) While she’s away, tidy up the house so that upon her return, she’s greeted by spaces that look and feel as refreshed as she does. Make Memories That Last a Lifetime

Last but not least, do everything you can to capture your precious moments together. Bring a nice camera along on your Mother’s Day excursion, or consider hiring a local photographer who can help you coordinate an official session. If you opt for a professional, make a fun day of it by getting everyone involved. Gather the whole family, snap a few candid shots, and Mom will have pictures to share for years to come! (Bonus points: Mom can use these pictures for her annual holiday card without feeling like she’s obligating you to sit for a high-pressure portrait.)
