Keen on Green – A How To for the Emerald Isle Hue

St. Patrick’s Day became an official Irish holiday in 1903 and, whether you were born and raised Irish or you’re simply Irish at heart, we’re willing to bet you’ve donned your green and raised a few [Guinness] toasts in honor of Ireland’s patron saint! Today, we salute St. Patrick’s Day with our take on the “wearing of the green” by highlighting a few of our favorite spaces that boast the day’s cherished color! So, whether it’s a leafy-hued paint or olive green accent pieces, these spaces are sure to inspire your inner leprechaun. Enjoy!

Feeling Hue Happy:

We’re kicking things off with this kitchen which stands in an 18th century Irish estate owned by the late John Hurt. We love how the deep green cabinets and doors are perfectly paired with brass hardware. It feels quaint, lived in, and perfectly Irish.

“I have loved Ireland for about twenty-five years, but I couldn’t live here until I fell in love with a girl who loved it too. It’s not an easy place to live, it’s not chic—but Jo understands it. She also loves the Irish people—their poetry, their openness. The people are what we notice most when we come home,” shares John.

How moving! For more, check out the full home tour here and if you’re loving this color as much as we are, check out Benjamin Moore’s Ocean Tropic for a similar shade!

We love getting playful with color in play rooms – seems to make sense, doesn’t it? – and here we opted for a pale green hue that anchors the whimsical wallpaper and accessories. The space feels youthful, vibrant, and soft; all the things that make for a perfect play area.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber’s lacquered green bar shines bright like a diamond and feels like it hopped straight out of a posh 1960s pad. When it comes to smaller spaces, don’t be afraid to opt for a glossy finish! We love Fine Paints of Europe for their premier lacquer paints and luxurious color offerings.

The family who lives in this Heights home loves color, so we went bold in the office painting the built-ins a vibrant green, and paired it with neutral furnishings and white wall paint, allowing the shelves to pop without overpowering the space.

Accent Pieces:

If you can’t commit to paint, try incorporating green through a variety of accent pieces that can be moved from room to room or recovered in another material if your love for green begins to fade.

Nature-inspired, soft, and peaceful, green looks lovely in the bedroom, and if you opt for a deep green with earthy undertones, it can serve as a neutral and can be easily paired with other hues.

Green accents abound in Karen Elson’s living space making the room feel comfortable and lived-in yet refined, and we love how the subtle tonal variations of the drapery and chair lend added depth and dimension! If going green with your fabric seems like too much, you can always update the mat on your artwork to a deep forest green like the one seen here; it’s a great way to test out the color in your space!
